Abstract

The results of surgery have been superior to clinical treatment in promoting sustained weight loss and con-trol of comorbidities. The number of patients undergoing bariatric surgery by the Unified Health System (SUS) is increasing, but there are few reports in the national literature on surgical outcomes, especially in the context of the SUS. Weight loss results can be quantified using certain parameters. In this article, we seek to present the effectiveness of weight loss in the first laparoscopic bariatric surgeries performed at Hospital José Martiniano de Alencar (HMJMA), a SUS institution in Ceará. To this end, the records of 50 op-erated patients were reviewed and the decrease in body mass index (BMI), percentage of weight loss (%PP) and percentage of excess weight loss (%EWL) were evaluated. In our article, a decrease in BMI from 41 kg/m2 preoperatively to 29 kg/m2 in 6 months was observed. An overall %PP of 10, 21 and 28 and an over-all %PP of 28, 55 and 73 were recorded in the 1st, 3rd and 6th postoperative period, respectively. When comparing the weight loss parameters of the two techniques, there was no statistically significant difference between GV and RYGB for the period studied. Obesity surgeries at the HMJMA present satisfactory initial results of efficacy in weight loss and safety compatible with other studies and are due to the rigorous peri-operativemanagement, technical standardization and dedication of the multidisciplinary team.
