The pandemic caused by COVID-19 has considerably altered the routineof surgeons all over the planet. For example, elective surgeries were initiallycancelled and postponed until new operational protocols were establishedaiming at greater safety forprofessionals and patients. In this sense, to ensurethis end, it is necessary, in the preoperative context, the testing of all patientswho will undergo some invasive procedure, so that an eventual infection leadsto postponement for a period that can varyfrom 4 to 12 weeks depending onthe patient’s clinical conditions. At the intraoperative level, although the surgicalcenter team already has the habit of using personal protective equipment (PPE)to avoid contamination, especially by fluids and secretions,in times ofpandemic, the use of these PPE have gained even greater importance in thisscenario of contamination by aerosol particles. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the impacts of the COVID-19pandemic on the surgical scenario, presenting the main measures to beadopted during elective surgical procedures to prevent and control infection byCOVID-19. To this end, a literature review was conducted on the impact of thepandemic in the surgical setting. It was concluded that in face of the behaviorpattern of the disease not yet fully clarified, the adoption of safety measuresrelated to the virus should last for an undeter-mined period, in order to ensuregreater safety for physicians and patients involved.
