Pre-eclampsia is a common diagnosis worldwide with an increasing incidence, being the main cause of ma-ternal mortality in Brazil, especially when occurs the development of its most severe forms, the HELLP syn-drome and eclampsia. This review seeks, in the medical literature, the most important updates for the un-derstanding of this pathology, bringing data from the main guidelines of the most recent studies in the medical literature, in order to increase the knowledge of health professionals, aiming at more assertive behaviors at the level of prevention, management and treatment, in order to prevent complications and achieve better maternal-fetal results. 49 articles were selected from the SciELO, PubMed, NCBI databases and classic and current definitions book chapters, among them articles in Portuguese and English published between 2015 and 2020, also including the main and most recent recommendations published in guideli-nes.In recent years, there have been some changes in the diagnosis and management of this pathology in order to raise awareness, treat early and change the outcome of many pregnancies. Therefore, correct ma-nagement of the condition and adequate maternal-fetal care are some of the most important strategies which will underpin current guidelines involving pre-eclampsia. According to this literature review, it has been seen that the main purposes of these more recent guidelines are based on maintenance and recovery pressure control, prevention of seizures, and addressingpossible complications in a more agile and appro-priate manner.
